What is Neidan?

Neidan (內丹), also known as internal alchemy, is a Daoist practice focused on cultivating and refining the body’s inner energies to achieve spiritual transformation, longevity, and ultimately, immortality. Unlike external alchemy, which involves the physical manipulation of substances like herbs and minerals to create an elixir of life, neidan is an inward journey that involves specific physical and energetic practices designed to strengthen, harmonize and purify the body, mind, and spirit.

Differences Between Neidan and Qigong

Neidan (Internal Alchemy) and Qigong are both traditional Chinese practices focused on cultivating one’s being, but they differ significantly in their approach and depth. A common opinion is that qigong and alchemy are the same – they are not.

While both are good for one’s health, the ultimate goals and methodologies are vastly different.

Qigong is working with the basic energies of the being, purifying the channels and accumulating more qi. However, that is where the limitations lie with Qigong – true Neidan goes beyond Qigong into the realm of the miraculous – into the realm of the creation of the spiritual elixir, and the complete attainment of the greatest spiritual goals.

It is significantly more difficult to find traditional and authentic Neidan methods that are fully and completely preserved, as not only such knowledge is rare, but it is an extremely closely guarded secret. As part of the Wu Liu Pai school, we are able to provide such access.
